Why is it when loved ones depart overseas there seems to be a glut of political-themed or environmental disasters?! Another terrorist attack in London, missiles flying over Japan. As Bilbo Baggins said to Frodo, "it's a dangerous business, going out your door". Husband Jamie had left for Japan, just before Auckland airport run out of aviation fuel. So it seemed appropriate this week to go with the Japanese recipes from "The Great NZ Cookbook" which Sachie Nomura from Parnell, Auckland had contributed. Sushi and Teriyaki Chicken were favourites for the kids, always a good start. Like most of us, I was time poor, it was a Sunday evening, and we had spent a fair bit of the day enjoying being out and about. However there were a number of other pressing issues to deal with before I started preparing dinner, and unfortunately, the curse of the chicken occurred. There seems to be a phenomenon at our household that is way over the statistical probability of chance (I'm just making that up by the way - call it false news - it's all the rage). When Jamie leaves for overseas, there often is a domestic disaster or a chicken death. And it was a chicken death this time. I found the last of the brown shavers in a rather unnaturally reclined position in the chicken coop. Don't worry this chook did not contribute to the menu that night and received a proper burial in what is now known as the chicken corner.
The two recipes are simple, tasty and easy to make. Sushi rolling was not new to me, and I do find it satisfying to roll the nori, and more relaxing than flipping a pancake. The sushi vinegar was added to the rice, and the avocado and salmon were all at the ready.
The teriyaki chicken used boneless chicken thighs that were dusted in flour and cooked on a high heat, then the teriyaki sauce was added. I even made toasted the sesame seeds (but they were slightly undercooked). The only issue was being overzealous with shoving items back in the fridge and upsetting a container of yoghurt that I ended up wearing down my front. I took the opportunity to change into a Japanese gown (a present from a previous trip). I felt quite authentic as I prepared the sushi.... flying yoghurt is far more palatable than a missile!
